The European Commission will furnish over one million euros to help the Chisinau Primaria [city hall] carry out two projects of vital importance – to repair the city’s rain sewage network and improve the system of energy saving, Chisinau Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca told a news conference today.
According to him, Chisinau will receive Euro 752 thousand for the first project, in whose frame the capital city is supposed to build in 2 years an up-to-date station for collecting and treating rain and snow waters, and to repair the existing network of municipal rain drainage to thus put an end to floods that paralyze many places in the city after every substantial rain.
One of such places is the city’s central railroad terminal, which is nearly 150 years old, and all these long years it has been perhaps the city’s greatest victim every time it rains. So, in the project frame, 12 water-catching facilities will be built in the three main streets running down towards the railroad station. The rain water thus trapped will be accepted by a powerful collector to appear in that locality, too.
Dirk Schuebel, Head of the Delegation of the European Commission to Moldova, said at the news conference that Chisinau consumes too much heating and electricity because the energy is used inefficiently. This necessitates undertaking energy saving measures without delay.
Mr. Schuebel said the European Commission will provide over 336 thousand euros for working out an energy efficiency strategy and for improving the mechanism of energy consumption. He stressed that struggle for heating and electricity saving should focus primarily on teaching the citizenry to be economical, on efficient insulation of public institution buildings such as schools etc.
In his words, to achieve a successful implementation of the project, it is necessary to carry out feasibility studies for at least 3 more projects – heat insulation of apartment houses, street illumination, and the using of renewable energy sources.
Dirk Schuebel said the European Union will be constantly helping Moldova in creating proper conditions for population’s living and in bringing the republic closer to European standards.
