The Russian Foreign Ministry says that the verdict on the Pasat case is very cruel and raises questions regarding respect for human rights in Moldova. <\/p>\n

The Russian ministry released such a statement with a couple of days after Chisinau has sent a protest note to Moscow, in which it demanded explanations in connection with the direct threats of Anatoly Chubais, chairman of RAO EAS, against President Vladimir Voronin. <\/p>\n

The ministerial statement is not a response to the Moldovan diplomatic note, but it expresses optimism that Pasat would use his right to appeal, including to the European Court of Human Rights, and he would finally "make justice to himself." The statement reiterates the thesis of Chubais that this issue will be monitored by the international community and human rights organisations. According to Moscow, Pasat is a respected person, while his sentencing is doubtful and political. <\/p>\n

The court sentenced Pasat to a 10-year jail term on January 17 for illegal sale of 21 MIG-29 aircraft. The Prosecutor-General’s Office said that the Moldovan budget had lost 55 million dollars after this transaction, which took place in 1997, when Pasat was defence minister. Also, Pasat was found guilty for a transaction with a Slovakian firm to which he had sold combat reactive systems Uragan and rockets for very low prices. <\/p>\n

Chubais said after the court has sentenced former defence minister of Moldova Valeriu Pasat, former director of the domestic security service SIS, adviser for the RAO EAS Rossii chairman, that he will use all his influence on the international arena in order to obtain the acquittal of Pasat. He said that the sentence has a political nature and warned that President Voronin "will have serious problems." Also, representatives of this company assured that their actions are coordinated with the Russian Foreign Ministry and other Russian official institutions. <\/p>\n

In reply, the administration of President Vladimir Voronin has asked RAO EAS Rossii chairman Anatoli Chubais to explain his threats against Moldovan president. The presidential adviser for interior affairs, Mark Tkaciuk, expressed hope that the Foreign Ministry and intelligence services of the Russian Federation would not be late to provide details in this regard to Chisinau.
