"The Kremlin has come to the conclusion that the blackmail with gas against Ukraine could lead to most population showing solidarity with the Kiev leadership, which would compromise the chances of the politicians backed by Russia during the elections. This is the valid conclusion in case of Moldova as well", a well-known western political analyst, Vlad Socor, has said in an interview given with the Free Europe radio station. <\/p>\n

"The traditional, monopolistic source of gas supply is Russia, but Russia wants to take advantage from its monopoly in order to put quite difficult financial conditions, and possibly, dangerous political conditions. If the Russian blackmail continues, however, if the Kremlin wishes in this way to "punish" Moldova and its leadership, in this case the Kremlin will directly and cynically harm all the citizens of Moldova," Socor said. <\/p>\n

He also said that any Moldovan politician who would accuse the country’s leadership for the emerged situation, would become an irreversibly compromised politician in the eyes of the electors’ overwhelming majority. "The European solidarity in everything which deals with the supply with energy sources is just to be built. At present, the domestic solidarity between all the components of the society is the first requirement in order to overcome this situation, which is faced by all the citizens of Moldova," Socor said. <\/p>\n

"Last week, President Vladimir Voronin and his team initiated and edited the joint declaration Yushchenko-Voronin, addressed to the European Union (EU). The declaration proposes that all the importing countries tackle the gas problem in the spirit of the European solidarity. The document offers to the European Union precise suggestions for practical steps: for instance, international experts could involve in our negotiations with Russia on the gas issue and help at the fair formation of prices for gas on the basis of EU’s methodology," Socor said. <\/p>\n

According to the analyst, by these proposals, the declaration became the most valuable political document out of all the documents which appeared in a Europe upset by the gas crisis. The history will record the fact that the political initiative and the document’s editing belong to Chisinau. <\/p>\n

"Meanwhile, Moscow reached an agreement with Kiev, but the financial and political price of the Russian gas for Ukraine is unclear for the time being. Nevertheless, one thing seems to be decided starting now: the state company Naftohaz Ukraini along with the RosUkrEnergo firm, which is managed by the Russian Gazprom from the shadow, will set up a joint company to deliver gas to the domestic market of Ukraine, as well as, through Ukraine, to Moldova," Socor also said. <\/p>\n

According to Vlad Socor, in this way, the gas is scheduled not to be delivered directly by Gazprom to Moldova, but indirectly, by the Naftohaz-RosUkrEnergo joint company. "It seems that the respective gas is to come from both Russia and Turkmenistan.
