The Alliance Our Moldova (AMN) has demanded the resignation of Justice Minister Victoria Iftodi because she "has used up her professional potential," AMN lawmaker Vitalia Pavlicenco stated to BASA. <\/p>\n

She noted that AMN demanded Iftodi’s resignation at a secret sitting of the parliament on Wednesday, December 28, which discussed justice-related problems, especially the situation of penitentiaries in Moldova, in particular, of the preventive detention facility # 3 Chisinau, former penitentiary # 13. <\/p>\n

Pavlicenco said that a report of the special commission on situation of inmates from the penitentiary # 3 in the Chisinau municipality, presented by Iurie Stoicov, chairman of the parliamentary commission for national security, defence and public order, signals shortcomings in this institution in which the preventive detention lasts several years in some cases. <\/p>\n

The AMN parliamentarian also recalled the failure to comply with obligation to subordinate all penitentiaries to the Justice Ministry. This obligation is part of the commitment that Moldova has assumed while joining the Council of Europe in 1995. At present, detention institutions are subordinated to the Interior Ministry or Justice Ministry, she underlined. <\/p>\n

The sitting approved a draft decision stipulating the need to improve the situation in penitentiaries, to reconsider the functions of certain functionaries of the Justice Ministry and to continue the activity of the special commission. <\/p>\n

Pavlicenco stated to BASA that though the initiative to include these problems in agenda came from AMN, the AMN faction did not vote the draft decision. <\/p>\n
