President Vladimir Voronin demanded from the Moldovan Government to work more energetically to promote the consolidation of European standards in all spheres of life – in economy, population’s welfare, society democratization. <\/p>\n

On Wednesday afternoon, the head of state attended the Government’s last working meeting of the year, and pointed out, in particular, that each civil servant must clearly realize the need for European integration and do all he or she can to achieve that goal. <\/p>\n

Among the main problems the Government must focus on in 2006, Voronin named modernization of infrastructure (first and foremost roads), deepening of reforms in the farm sector, and re-unification of farmlands on volunteer basis to further develop the sector by using advanced techniques. <\/p>\n

The President believes a particular attention in 2006 should be attached to poverty reduction, particularly in rural localities. <\/p>\n

He said, "Since 2001 [when his Communist Party came into power in Moldova] we have managed to reduce the number of poor people in the country 4-fold, but, still, struggle against poverty has to be continued. Errors committed in the farm sector reform have led to extreme forms of poverty in our rural localities. After we have returned to the administrative-territorial system based on raions, local administrations undertake measures to improve people’s living standards. Water-supply and centralized gas networks are being built, cultural centers are being restored. However, very much yet has to be done. Struggle against poverty must bear a more concrete character, so that citizens to the last one could be saved from poverty". <\/p>\n

The President highlighted that since the compulsory health insurance had been introduced in Moldova, investment in the public health sector has grown up 2.5-fold. <\/p>\n

Vladimir Voronin particularly underlined the 8.4% growth of gross domestic product in Moldova – a country having practically no essential natural resources such as minerals, oil or gas.<\/p>\n

Among the most important events of 2005 President Vladimir Voronin pointed out the EU-Moldova Action Plan signature, the start of the European Union Border Assistance Mission, change of the format of the Transnistrian negotiations, equipping Moldova with a higher-level Generalized System of Preferences, GSP+, in trade relations with European Union countries. \/\/ Infotag<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
