The price of gas that Moldova will pay next year remains unknown for the time being because negotiations continue, President Vladimir Voronin told a news conference on Wednesday. Also, he noted that he does no t know "any politics" in the gas problem. <\/p>\n

The chief of state appreciated the attitude of the Russian company Gazprom administration towards Moldova’s delegation that visited Moscow last week to negotiate the natural gas tariff as serious and constructive. "Our problem is that we are after, not b efore Ukraine from perspective of geographic proximity. Now we have to wait for their decision. However, we have many arguments in our favour and firstly that we pay for current gas consumption with regularity, while Moldova-Gaz is an enterprise in which Gazprom owns most of shares and it would be logical to wonder: do they want the bankruptcy of own branch?” Voronin said. Chisinau pays the historic debt of 122 million dollars towards Gazprom in instalments, by five million dollars a year, the chief of state reminded. <\/p>\n

He noted that he "has no intention" to salute the rise of prices, which is a try for Moldova, because they will also reduce the economic growth of the country welfare of people. Also, the chief of state recognised Russia’s right to establish own prioriti es regarding prices. "In our turn, we must do our best to identify fair solution to this situation, so that the price policy of Russia brings as few as possible damages to common people," Voronin underlined. He also promised that the government will help socially vulnerable layers to pay new prices. <\/p>\n

Speaking about report on withdrawal of the Transnistrian enterprise from Moldova-Gaz, Voronin said that the sides decided at last round of negotiations with Gazprom to keep the unity of the Moldovan gasification system. The Russian enterprise can buy the shares of the Transnistrian enterprise, while Chisinau will keep the 34 percent of shares. The president spoke about problem of payment of VAT for gas in the production country, contrary to norms of the World Trade Organisation. He outlined that Moldova should not expect gifts from Russia in this regard, but the problem will be solved because Moscow hopes to become a WTO member and it will have to comply with standards of this organisation. According to Voronin, "the rich budget of Moldova gives about 120 million dollars a year to Russia as gift because the VAT is not applied after destination principle." <\/p>\n
