\"\"Statement by the Presidency of the European Union concerning restrictive measures against the leadership of the Transnistrian region of Moldova (12\/12\/05) <\/p>\n

The European Union today decided to lift travel restrictions against eight persons from the Transnistrian region of Moldova. The restrictive measures were imposed in August 2004 against ten persons [Annex II] responsible for the widespread campaign of intimidation against teachers, parents and students of Latin-script Moldovan schools in the Transnistrian region. <\/p>\n

Following a review of the situation in November 2005, EU Member States agreed that restrictions against eight of the ten persons should be lifted, as the schools have re-opened as from 1 September and the situation for teachers, parents and students has improved considerably. The restrictions remain in place against two persons in Ribnitsa [Platonov and Cherbulenko], where the Latin-script Moldovan school is forced to continue operating from temporary premises. <\/p>\n

The Presidency of the European Union calls on those responsible to allow the school in Ribnitsa to return to its permanent premises without delay. The Presidency also notes that the EU will continue to monitor developments involving the schools very closely. <\/p>\n

Travel restrictions also remain in place against 17 members of the leadership in Transnistria [Annex I]. The restrictions were imposed in February 2003 in response to the unwillingness of the leadership in Transnistria to engage fully in efforts to reach a peaceful and comprehensive solution to the Transnistrian conflict. The EU continues to monitor this situation closely and will review the restrictive measures against these 17 individuals in the light of their willingness to engage fully in efforts to reach a peaceful solution to the conflict.
