An independent candidate to the seat of Chisinau general mayor, Vasile Ursu, picked up most votes at the 11 December new local elections in Chisinau, which were invalidated because of low voter turnout. <\/p>\n

According to the preliminary data put out by the Election Council of the Chisinau Constituency, Ursu harvested 52.91 per cent of the votes of those 22.6 per cent of voters who expressed their election will. <\/p>\n

Dorin Chirtoaca from the Liberal Party ranked second with 35.62 per cent of votes, being followed by far by the candidate of the Patria-Rodina-Ravnopravye bloc, Valentin Krilov, with 6.92 per cent. <\/p>\n

The candidate of the Green Alliance Ecology Party, Oleg Cernei, picked up 3.51 per cent of the votes, and Gheorghe Sima, put up by the Patria-Rodina Labour Union – 1.04 per cent. <\/p>\n

The fourth attempt to elect the Chisinau general mayor failed because of voters’ abstention. Under the election code, the ballot is declared invalid if the turnout is less than 33 per cent. According to the legislation, the Central Election Commission will fix the date of new elections at least 60 days ahead of the polls. <\/p>\n
