This is the fourth time the Chisinau residents fail to elect their general mayor. Less than one third of voters, the minimum turnout requirement for local elections, went to the polls on December 11. <\/p>\n

Only 20.07 percent of about 570,000 inhabitants of the capital went to the polls, thus the repeated local elections can be declared invalid. <\/p>\n

Five candidates, one of which independent, ran for mayoralty this time. <\/p>\n

According to preliminary results, the largest number of votes went to the independent candidate Vasile Ursu – 52.91 percent and 35.62 percent went to Dorin Chirtoaca, representative of the Liberal Party. <\/p>\n

Valentin Krylov, representative of the Electoral Block “Patria-Rodina-Ravnopravie” polled 6.92 percent and Oleg Cernei from the Ecologist Party “Green Alliance” gained 3.51 percent of the poll. <\/p>\n

The smallest number of votes went this time to the candidate representing the Labor Union “Patria-Rodina”, Gheorghe Sima, who polled 1.04 percent of the vote. <\/p>\n

Repeated elections have also been organized in another six settlements. <\/p>\n
