Foreign ministers of the NATO members states who attended the North-Atlantic Council in Brussels on Thursday, December 8, urged the Russian Federation to resume and to complete the pullout of its troops from Mo ldova as soon as possible, according to the final communication of the meeting cited by Mediafax. <\/p>\n

Point 16 of the document agreed by all 26 members of NATO reminds to the Russian Federation that the fulfilment of its commitments assumed in Istanbul in 1999 regarding Georgia and Moldova creates conditions for NATO member states and other signatory cou ntries of the Conventional Forces in Europe (CFE) Treaty to ratify this revised agreement. <\/p>\n

"From this perspective, we salute the important progress registered in Russia and Georgia, according to their May 30, 2005 joint declaration on withdrawal of Russian forces and we wait for a resolution to the unsolved issues. Instead, we regret the absen ce of progress regarding withdrawal of Russian military forces from Moldova and urge Russia to resume and complete this pullout as soon as possible," reads the communication. <\/p>\n

In turn, Foreign Minister Mihai Ungureanu said that he insisted on the need of an honest attitude of the sides participating in the Transnistrian issue. <\/p>\n

He noted that he has seized all the opportunities offered by the NATO Ministerial Meeting until now in order to capture the attention on situation in Transnistria and the way the sides participating in the crisis settlement process react. <\/p>\n

According to the Romanian minister, "the level of political honesty" needed to reach a compromise on the Transnistrian issue was not registered until now, and this was also observed at the OSCE Ministerial Meeting in Ljubljana, Slovenia, on Monday. <\/p>\n

Ungureanu demanded an "honest" attitude from participants in the Transnistrian settlement process, indicating the "shadow economic ties between Transnistria and other countries." <\/p>\n

"Honesty would relieve the dialogue at the level of political attitude and it would reveal the shadow economic ties between Tiraspol and other states participating in the Transnistrian issue settlement, so that to eliminate any underground games, hidden arrangements between participants, which turn the negotiation process in a farce," Ungureanu explained. <\/p>\n

The minister stressed that the topic does not represent "a superficial issue" for the North-Atlantic Alliance, though it is not a proper matter of NATO and added that he will tackle this issue during the NATO-Russia Council as well. Russia threatened on Wednesday to withdraw from the CFE Treaty, if the military presence of the United States and NATO approaches its borders, according to AFP. <\/p>\n
