Not even the mid-September "extremely unfortunate event" – as the officials of the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense put it –, when a Russian plane, "got lost" in the Lithuanian airspace, under NATO protection, crashed near Kaunas. The plane was armed to the teeth, being endowed with 4 air-air missiles. It was said, of course, the occupation was not an occupation, that Lithuania willingly accepted to join the Soviet Union and to give up its sovereignty, but we also know how things really were. Now it’s about the excuses, about the compensations. Hypothetically, a civilized society would probably expect such a gesture, especially from a government who has no direct responsibility for the dictatorship of the Soviet period, nut I so not expect such a thing. We need one more generation to pass for the new Russia to accept such a gesture as a normal one in developing relationships with another state. I would be extremely pleased – and I believe I am speaking on behalf of all the Lithuanians – of the current Russian Government simply admits that the unfortunate events of the Soviet period really took place, that the imposing of the Soviet regime was illegal, against all moral rights and against all democratic practices.
