The printing of ballots for the repeat elections for the mayor-general of Chisinau will cost about 118,500 lei. <\/p>\n

The Central Election Commission (CEC) categorically denies the press reports that it could have saved 70,000 lei should it had printed the ballots after the withdrawal of the three candidates from the electoral race. <\/p>\n

CEC secretary Iurie Cioca stated to BASA that such statements are false. He noted that the ballot papers could not be prepared by the December 11 repeat elections, if the CEC waited till December 5, the last day when candidates could withdraw from the el ectoral race in line with legislation. <\/p>\n

The Constituency Election Council of the Chisinau municipality (CECC) announced on Monday that about 70,000 lei could be saved, if the ballots were not printed "in this groundless hurry." <\/p>\n

No other demands for withdrawal of candidates from the electoral race were submitted on Monday by midnight. Mircea Rusu, candidate on behalf of the Our Moldova Alliance, withdrew from campaign on December 2, while Eduard Musuc, candidate of the Social De mocratic Party, and Olga Nicolenco, candidate of the Social Liberal Party, left the electoral race on December 5. The candidates motivated their withdrawal through decisions of their parties. Also, they feared that these elections are "useless spending o f financial resources and forces" and the scrutiny will fail again because of absenteeism of the electorate. The stamp "withdrawn" will be applied near names of these candidates. <\/p>\n

Five candidates will compete for the December 11 repeat scrutiny: Dorin Chirtoaca, on behalf of the Liberal Party; Valentin Kralov, on behalf of the Electoral Bloc Patria-Rodina – Ravnopravye; Gheorghe Sima, on behalf of the Labour Union Patria-Rodina; i ndependent Vasile Ursu; and Oleg Cernei, of the Green Alliance Ecological Party. <\/p>\n
