Washington, DC, December 1, 2005 (moldova.org) — Speaking in Washington Ambassador Vagif Sadigov, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, mentioned that GUAM’s priorities are shifting towards engaging the member countries in cooperation on economic projects. <\/div>\n

Sadigov along with Heydar Babayev, Azeri Minister of Economic Development spoke at a briefing for US businesses on Wednesday, November 30th "The Azerbaijan Beyond Oil and Gas: Commercial Briefing by U.S. Ambassador Reno Harnish and Azerbaijani Cabinet Members." <\/i><\/div>\n

"Currently, GUAM is working on building the legal framework that would allow our countries to cooperate in infrastructure projects and in establishing a free trade area," said Vahif Sadigov.  <\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
Countries are planning to implement two major projects. <\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
First, launching the GUAM Trade and Transport Facilitation project aimed at fostering trade by promoting more efficient and less costly trade flows across the borders. <\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
Second project is the establishment of the GUAM Virtual Center on combating terrorism, organized crime, drug trafficking and other dangerous types of crime and the Interstate Information Management System. The main objective of the Virtual Center is to promote joint efforts of the GUAM participating states in fighting against terrorism, transnational and cross-border crimes with the goal of reaching economic prosperity and stability in the GUAM region. The Virtual Center will serve as a focal point for communication, analysis and exchange of operational information in real time regime on law enforcement, as well as for facilitation of joint operations and coordination of major crime investigations. <\/div>\n

Cooperation between Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, and Moldova started with the GUAM consultative forum, established on October 10, 1997, in Strasbourg as a way to coordinate their policies in resolving separatist conflicts and removal of Russian troops and munitions from their territories. It was named after the initial letters of each of those countries. In April 1999, Uzbekistan also joined, changing the name of the grouping to GUUAM but ultimately Uzbekistan left the organization in May 2005. <\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
