Foreign Minister Cyril Svoboda will open the Czech embassy in Moldova on December 19, during his visit to Chisinau. <\/p>\n

So far, the Czech embassy in Romania has represented Czech interests in Moldova where about 500 Czechs live. <\/p>\n

According to unofficial information, diplomat Petr Kypr is to be Czech ambassador to Moldova. Previously, he was Czech ambassador to Norway and Slovenia. <\/p>\n

The opening of a new embassy is an exception in the present period when the Foreign Ministry is planning the closure of several diplomatic representations for the sake of economy. <\/p>\n

Moldova is one of the eight priority countries to which Czech development aid goes. According to the Foreign Ministry, the Czech Republic is greatly interested in its pro-European orientation. <\/p>\n

"Czech-Moldovan relations were not so intensive in the past as, for instance, relations with the Balkan countries. The situation has started changing only in 2003 when trade between the two countries also started to grow," Petr Kratochvil from the Institute of International Relations said. <\/p>\n

Moldova is poor compared to other European countries but it wants to become a member of the European Union in the future. <\/p>\n
