The Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of Europe (CLRAE) that monitored the November 27 elections appeal to Moldovan politicians to prove responsibility and take urgent measures as regards the election of the Mayor of Chisinau Municipality. <\/p>\n

Chairman of the CLRAE delegation David Lloyd Williams told Monday a press conference the political forces proved passivity from the very beginning of the electoral campaign for the local elections which Mr Williams called strange. <\/p>\n

“A dialogue between the political groups would be appropriate to give electors respect and confidence in the electoral process,” the British official said. <\/p>\n

Speaking of how elections took place, Lloyd Williams said they were organized in line with international standards and most of the stipulations of the Electoral Code have been observed. <\/p>\n

The CLRAE delegation voiced concern over the lack of voters’ interest in the campaign, specifying that some modifications to the electoral legislation until the 2007 elections may well improve the situation. <\/p>\n

Representative of the Russian Federation to CLRAE Veceaslav Rogov told that despite some minor technical infringements, as a whole the elections took place in a democratic way. <\/p>\n

Rogov called the threshold of one third of voters necessary for validating the elections too big for a young country such as Moldova. <\/p>\n

David Lloyd Williams refused to comment on President Vladimir Voronin’s interference in the activity of local public administration, specifying that he would be surprised to hear that somebody else takes decisions instead of local authorities in his country. <\/p>\n

The Congress of Local and Regional Authorities will present in the shortest time a more ample report on the irregularities observed in the November 27 elections.
