President Vladimir Voronin asserts that no energy crisis will threaten Moldova this winter, even though the power supplies from the Cuciurgan Power Station have been ceased and the Russian natural gas suppliers intend to increase prices. The head of state says that both decisions are of political nature. <\/p>\n

In an interview broadcast by PRO TV Chisinau channel, the chief of state mentioned that Moldova produces 30-35 percent of the electric power it consumes. About 70 percent of the necessary electricity will be imported from the nuclear power stations of Ukraine, and Romania will provide electric power for the settlements from the south of the country, which are located near the high tension lines through which the neighbor state transports electric power. <\/p>\n

Vladimir Voronin also said that the cessation of power supplies from the Cuciurgan Power Station is a politically influenced decision and that this enterprise will not continue to exist if it rejected the most important consumer. At the same time the head of state emphasized that the legality of the privatization of the respective power station by the Russian enterprise RAOES “must be examineed” given the fact that the Transdniestrian authorities that signed the privatization documents are not recognized at international level. <\/p>\n

Vladimir Voronin confirmed that RAOES is willing to purchase Union Fenosa’s power distribution networks. He said that the Moldovan authorities “will not interfere”, but they will take actions for this thing not to happen. <\/p>\n

As to the price of natural gas delivered by Gazprom, Voronin said it will rise. The authorities will adopt measures for the population not to be effected, without specifying yet the method of “compensation”. He also said that a group of Moldovan experts is now in Moscow to negotiate the price of the supplied gas starting 1 January 2006. At the same time the President mentioned that this problem must be solved in concert with the Kiev authorities as Ukraine imports natural gas also from Russia and through the same pipelines. <\/p>\n
