President Vladimir Voronin does not intend to step down from the post of chairman of the Party of Moldovan Communists (PCRM), because his resignation would mean a betrayal, since the party is on reformation way. <\/p>\n

Voronin delivered this statement at the TV programme In Profunzime broadcasted by Pro TV Chisinau on Tuesday evening. The president said that he did not promise the depoliticising of the post of chief of state and journalists misunderstood him in the ele ctoral campaign. "I want to be the president of all the citizens, but I need political support for this post. It would be a betrayal to leave now the party that helped me become president," Voronin noted. He confirmed that he is working on reformation of the party, which will be of the left wing. Voronin noted that he does not hurry up to announce how the PCRM will be named or to reveal other details. <\/p>\n

Speaking about the forthcoming elections for the Chisinau mayor-general post, the chief of state said that "the government and president support Vasile Ursu," independent candidate. He criticized the opponents of Ursu and admitted that he cannot be indif ferent towards results of the scrutiny in the capital in his quality of president. <\/p>\n

Also, the president underlined that he "appreciates very highly the partnership created with certain opposition parliamentary parties after April 4." He stressed the importance of opposition in control bodies of the state and need to reform the juridical system. These were some of conditions of the opposition for election of Voronin as chief of state. At the same time, the chief of state announced that reforms "must be implemented step by step, humanly and qualitatively," not in a hurry. The Moldovan le ader motivated the rise of the number of lawsuits lost at the European Court of Human Rights through failure to execute judgments. However, he noted that a draft law on responsibility of authorities for adoption of wrong decision is being worked out. <\/p>\n

Speaking about Transnistrian problem, the president reiterated the old stance of Chisinau that only conflict resolution projects that fit the law on basic provisions of Transnistria’s status will be accepted for talks. He underlined that he holds documen ts from "the chancellery of Sadam Husein, which confirm that weapon manufacturing equipment have been solved through Transnistria." The president fell short of revealing the state which carried out the transactions through the separatist administration i n Tiraspol. <\/p>\n

As regards the relations with Russia, especially natural gas imports and energy problem faced by Moldova, Voronin noted that "many things have changed since we deal with reintegration of the state." He insisted that the sides negotiate and expressed opti mism that these problems would be solved. According to Voronin, the relations with Romania are good, though the Moldovan leader rejects the notion "two states – one nation" contrary to Romanian President Traian Basescu. He opted for ratification of the b asic treaty with Romania, but noted that it must correspond to principles of the European Union. <\/p>\n

Also on Tuesday, the president accused journalists of misinterpreting him regarding the problem of the Bessarabian Metropolitan Church, quoting the chief of state as saying two weeks ago that it is not registered. "The Bessarabian Church was registered at the demand of ECHR, we have paid a fine and everybody knows this," Voronin stressed. Also, he underlined that the honours paid to the bishop of Moscow and entire Russia who visited Chisinau this month were due to his status of Christian. <\/p>\n

Elsewhere, Voronin commented on latest reshuffles in the cabinet of ministers. He outlined that he did not criticize the activity of executive, but discussed with members of the cabinet of ministers and invited them "to work, not to live with recollectio ns." As regards Premier Tarlev, the president avoided a categorical answer regarding intention to sack him. Voronin outlined that Tarlev "is criticized because they trust him. The executive has a potential. Tarlev and his team are prepared well to get through provocations. The executive must consist of personalities and we perform reshuffles in order to create a truly good team." According to Voronin, the new minister of health and social protection, Ion Ababii, may become the third great minister after Testemiteanu and Dragomir. The former rector of the Medicine University was appointed as minister for the h ealthcare system reform. Voronin said that he has "no pretension" against former minister Valerian Revenco. <\/p>\n

Revenco was awarded the Order of the Republic immediately after being sacked from the minister office, while Tamara Sumskaia, director of the National House for Social Insurance (CNAS), was sacked last weekend for failure of duties. The executive accused CNAS of failure to control the invalidity degrees, after people who do not hold this right became invalids. The competences on this issue belong to the Ministry of Health and Social Protection and CNAS.
