(…) Rene van der Linden, president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, secretary general of the European Council Terry Davis, European Parliament president Josep Borrell and European Commission president Jose Manuel Durao Barroso attended the event. But one more event took place at the same time: Romania took over the Committee of Ministers presidency and for 6 months (November 2005- May 2006). Romania has planned to make use of the 6-month mandate to promote the fundamental values of the European Council and plead for improving the organization’s efficiency, says the Romanian Ministry of foreign Affairs. Romania will have as priority the promotion of democratic standards, the consolidation of protection of human rights in Europe, the efficiency and coherence of European institutional structures and the development of tolerant and open societies. The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has appointed high level coordination reunions with the European Union and OSCE, as well as series of conferences and seminars on points related to priorities. As we have noticed the Romanian ministry’s willingness to cooperate with Russia on matters related to the "continuity" in the European Council’s activity, we are reminding that last year in July 12 ECHR (the European Court for Human Rights) sentenced Russia in the trial on the two members of the Ilascu group: Andrei Ivantoc and Tudor Petrov Popa. The latter Romanians have been abusively imprisoned for more than 13 years in the Russian enclave Transdniestria. ECHR sentenced Russia and Moldova to pay substantial damages and also demanded them to free the last political prisons in Europe at once. Apart from the Basarabian teams of lawyers led by Alexandru Tanase and Vitalie Nagacevski and the Christian-Democrat Party in Chisinau, in Romania only ZIUA daily and Civic Media Association have been on campaign to get the prisoners free. There was established the Romanian Civic Initiative (http:\/\/www.ziua.net\/display.php?id=136199&data=2004-01-12). More than 120 civil society organizations joined us and signed the petition ZIUA published and sent to European and North Atlantic authorities. The 4 million people who signed the document are waiting to see of this cooperation with Russia leads to plea demanding Moscow to obey the ECHR sentence and set free the Romanians kidnapped and illegally imprisoned in Transdniestria.
