The opposition alliance “Moldova Noastra” (“Our Moldavia”) accused Moldavian President Vladimir Voronin of the “consistent negligence of the international standards for free elections.” <\/p>\n

The head of Moldavia did so with “the early elections in Gagauzia and the local elections in 2003, as well as with the pre-term elections in the summer of 2005,” a statement released by the alliance says, reports a REGNUM correspondent. <\/p>\n

A recent visit of Voronin to the office of Kishinev Mayor after the start of the election campaign in the capital shows, as the members of the alliance led by the former mayor of Kishinev Serafim Urekyan think, that “the national authorities recurrently interfere into the election process, which is unlawful.” <\/p>\n

“For the sake of the collective political interests Voronin puts his position of the Communist Party Leader above the position of the head of the state. The constitutional status of a people’s interests representative urges Voronin to invite all the candidates without sympathizing or disliking anyone, in case he has decided to consider the relations between the republican government and the city authorities. Otherwise, to maintain equal treating of the candidate during the election campaign, he should have abandoned the practice of manipulating the electorate in favor of any candidate,” the statement says. <\/p>\n

The alliance believes that “after Voronin lost the battle for the head of the capital for four times (two rounds of the elections in 2003 and two rounds in 2005), he was convinced that his party could not win trust of Kishinev voters in a transparent and fair election runoff, so he ‘borrowed’ another party’s candidate (acting Mayor Vassily Ursu, member of the alliance, but runs as an independent candidate — REGNUM) and tries to gain control over the capital by authoritarian means.” <\/p>\n

“The mayor elections have been turned into an overt farce, so we can expect the toughest conclusions from the international organizations.
