Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin believes time has not come yet to rename his Moldovan Communist Party. <\/p>\n

In his interview with Moskovsky Komsomolets newspaper of Moscow published today he said, “In principle, it is possible to change the name. But one should better ask who may then occupy this [vacant] place? Assume that we renounce the name. Then, those people who grasp this name will immediately get to parliament, with 7-8% ballots in the pocket. Meanwhile, I am not at all sure these will be really honest people, and they may well turn in the wrong direction. Besides this, about 35% MCP members are former members of the former CPSU [Communist Party of the Soviet Union], so what do you think their reaction is going to be? Therefore, we are not going ‘to run ahead of the locomotive’ only because somebody is imposing something on us!”, stated Vladimir Voronin. <\/p>\n

He explained that the Moldovan Communist Party does not any more speaks about building communism, and now uses other terms in its party lexicon such as “various models of socialism”, or “a society of social justice”. <\/p>\n

“This is not at all a misleading of the electorate. This is a demonstration of continuity and traditions”, explained the Communist leader. <\/p>\n

He refuted assertions that the Christian Democratic Popular Party and its leader, Moldovan Deputy Speaker Iurie Rosca are political allies to the Communists. <\/p>\n

“Rosca is not our ally. He is only a fellow traveler, beating somewhere around. But in these current problematic times, we are badly in need of society stabilization. Let Rosca better sit in the Parliament Presidium rather than up on the tree, with a loudspeaker in hand, conducting street demonstrations”, Voronin said. <\/p>\n[A couple of years ago, at the climax of students’ memorable protests in the Chisinau center, Rosca one day climbed up a tree to appeal to the noisy crowd with a loudspeaker. His photographs were then published in many papers.] <\/p>\n

Voronin disagrees with Rosca’s assertions that “Moldovans are Romanians”. <\/p>\n

“This year, we are marking the 646th anniversary of the Moldovan statehood. Meanwhile, less than 200 years have passed since the foundation of Romania as a state. So, how could the hen be born before the egg? Simply, Rosca is a very poor connoisseur of history”, concluded President Voronin. <\/p>\n

He dismissed Russian journalists’ sayings that his son Oleg Voronin “has trampled down half of the Moldovan economy”. <\/p>\n

“After my becoming President, my son became the most unhappy person in the country. He does not interfere into anything, and, poor boy, is now at sea, mot knowing what to do. Before, his company used to make flower fertilizers, then beetle-killer crayons. Presently, he is in the construction business, and has no finger in politics.
