Romanian Foreign Minister Mihai Razvan Ungureanu has stated to Radio Free Europe that the Transnistrian conflict resolution must be found "within Moldovan statehood, sovereignty of Moldovan state." <\/p>\n

"We think that the solution is in a wider autonomy formula, without giving birth to a confederative or federal speculation," Minister Ungureanu noted. <\/p>\n

Explaining why the Romanian Foreign Ministry has invited Moldovan Reintegration Minister Vasile Sova and the problems that the sides have discussed, the Romanian minister said that the meeting is part of a wide programme of contacts with all special repr esentatives of mediators and sides participating in the "Transnistrian issue". <\/p>\n

In addition, Ungureanu noted, "this is the first meeting with a direct witness of the October 27-28 negotiations, the first consultation in the 5+2 format under observation of the United States and European Union. <\/p>\n

Asked how Chisinau sees the participation of Romania in the Transnistrian settlement negotiations, the Romanian minister said that it is clear that Romania’s presence "tries to balance the dialogue format, in which the mediators OSCE, the Russian Federat ion and Ukraine, debate plans which are not completely adherent to Moldova’s expectations." <\/p>\n

At the same time, Romania believes that "the resolution must be found within Moldovan statehoods, sovereignty of Moldova state. We think that the solution is in a wider autonomy formula, without giving birth to a confederative and federalist speculation, " Ungureanu underlined. <\/p>\n

Asked if a Romanian project on settlement of the Transnistrian conflict could appear as a result of negotiations with Romania, Ungureanu reserved the right not to comment "on this probability," in order "to keep the freedom of action of the Romanian side ." However, these conditions are very necessary both for the Romanian side, and for "beneficiaries of information" that Bucharest confirms and synthesizes "in the case of Brussels and Washington," he added. <\/p>\n

Speaking about recent talks with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in Washington, in particular, regarding the Transnistrian issue, the Romanian minister said that the sides have discussed "a way to harmonize the stances of Romania and the U.S. wi th the way of organisation of the E.U. assistance mission at the Moldovan-Ukrainian border, and the role of Romania in the next rounds of talks in the dialogue format. <\/p>\n
