Russia’s military presence in Moldova and Georgia represents an obstacle to the settlement of conflicts, according to a joint statement by the GUAM member-states (Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova) unveiled in Vienna today, and made available to MOLDPRES by the Foreign and European Integration Ministry. <\/p>\n

The statement appreciates the North Atlantic Treaty’s approach to the prevention and settlement of conflicts. The GUAM member states reiterated conviction that the democratisation and demilitarisation of separatist regions is the safest way towards the territorial integrity of states affected by conflicts, and towards strengthening their independence and sovereignty. The settlement of conflicts in the GUAM states will increase their capacity to contribute to the fight against international terrorism, traffic with drugs, arms and human beings, and to cope with other threats to regional and international security, according to the statement. <\/p>\n

The GUAM member states voiced conviction that the withdrawal of Russian troops, in line with the Istanbul commitments, will speed up the settlement of political, economic and security problems these states face, and will facilitate the entering into force of the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe.
