The Joint Meeting of secretaries of Supreme Security Councils and heads of Information and Security Services of GUAM, which Chisinau hosts on November 3, discuss regional security issue, including energy, settl ement of frozen conflicts and combat of terrorism and trafficking in human beings, drugs and smuggling. <\/p>\n

According to a message read by Ion Morei, secretary of the Supreme Security Council of Moldova, settlement of security problems in the region, an objective followed by Moldovan GUAM leadership, is one of priorities of GUAM member states. The president pa rticularly tackled the separatism problem. He noted that GUAM could be used more efficiently for settlement of frozen conflicts. He expressed regret that some representatives of GUAM member states profit from situation in conflict areas for business inte rests. "Relations with the so-called banks in the Transnistrian region, as well as contacts through Chambers of Commerce support conflict situation and separatist regimes," Voronin wrote in the message. He underlined that the meeting must debate on this problem, as well as on issues regarding energy, ecological security and trafficking. <\/p>\n

Minister Stratan told the participants in the meeting that a centre for the combat of trafficking in human beings would open in Chisinau soon. He noted that the centre would comprise an international analysis department. "Experts from different states, both importers and exporters of trafficking in human beings will cooperate to solve this problem. In addition, experts of different organisations will be invited. I think that the role of GUAM and this meeting for optimisa tion of exchange of information in this regard is important," the first deputy premier noted. <\/p>\n

In turn, Ion Ursu, chief of the domestic security service SIS, said that the Thursday meeting is important though opportunity of participants to know each other better, to exchange information, and this would lead to strengthening of confidence between s ides and a more efficient cooperation. <\/p>\n

The Moldovan Foreign and European Integration Ministry and SIS organise the meeting at the level of secretaries of Supreme Security Councils and heads of Information and Security Services from GUAM member states. <\/p>\n

Taking part in the event are also special invitees from Romania and Lithuania, as well as representatives of NATO and SECI Centre. <\/p>\n

The meeting will discuss ways to secure the region, including in energy and environment areas, as well as will tackle joint efforts of GUAM members aimed to combat terrorism, smuggling, illegal trafficking in drugs and human beings, activities of extremi st movements. <\/p>\n

Moldova holds the GUAM acting leadership since April 2005.
