Moldavia has called statements of Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Special Representative Dmitry Tkach provocative and contradicting to the official Ukrainian policy. Earlier Tkach said it was possible that Transdnestr joins Ukraine. Position of the Ukrainian government toward settlement of Transdnestr conflict and perseverance of Moldavian territorial unity has been approved personally by president Viktor Yushchenko at a meeting with Moldavian President Vladimir Voronin, as a REGNUM correspondent was informed by sources in the Moldavian administration. <\/p>\n

According to the plan of Transdnestr settlement proposed by Ukraine and adopted by Moldavia, all sides of the conflict must be guided by aspiration for “preserving the observance of human rights and freedoms with respect towards territorial unity and sovereignty of Moldavia.” <\/p>\n

However, the plan also presumes the possibility of Transdnestr secession from Moldavia, that can happen if Moldavia “itself joins other country or loses international legal personality.” The secession in such case can be accepted by majority of Transdnestr citizens at a referendum. <\/p>\n

As independent observers noted to the REGNUM correspondent, such articles have been a part of every plan of Transdnestr settlement that had ever been discussed. Most recent Russian propositions presume the same secession possibilities. However, analytics think that such article is more a psychological move, because the statement that Moldavia wants to join Romania to regain control over Transdnestr is one of the favorite “scare-crows” of Transdnestr President Igor Smirnov team that are often used to scare the region’s citizens. <\/p>\n

But spectators also think, that if such a referendum becomes possible, Transdnestr will head towards independence, but because approximately equal number of Transdnestr citizens are Russians and Ukrainians (approx. 80-120 thousands), assumptions that most citizens will chose one country to join are too hasty. <\/p>\n

Experts also remind that Ukrainian and Russian radicals, including members of parliament, drafted lots of different schemes of Transdnestr secession.
