Infotag’s interview with Alex Grigorievs, Director of the National Democratic Institute Mission to Moldova.<\/p>\n

Q: Which parties do you cooperate with in Moldova? <\/p>\n

A: We work with all parliamentary parties, and, certainly, with the ruling Communist Party. Among extra-parliamentary forces I can mention the Social Democratic Party, for which we organized a whole series of trainings. Currently, we are examining possibilities of arranging such training for small parties, for if they exist they should have a certain place in the country’s political spectrum. We will help them come to know the particulars of strategy, and will show how to collaborate with one another and with large parties, and may be even to create coalitions. <\/p>\n

Q: After the March 2005 parliamentary elections, Moldova has also come to have a coalition, albeit unofficial, of the majority Communist Party, Christian Democratic Popular Party, Democratic Party, and Social Liberal Party. How do you assess it? <\/p>\n

A: This is a fairly specific coalition, because these parties voted [in parliament] for President but not for Government. Consequently, this is a presidential, not a governmental coalition. Personally I think that any coalition, any agreement is useful, at least because it gives experience of inter-party communication. I would not rather discourse from the viewpoint of Moldovan policy or politicians, but I repeat that this coalition is useful as an experience of a compromise, so it is better than pointless confrontation – for all sides concerned. <\/p>\n

Q: How do you see the future of this coalition? Has it any chances to manifest itself, or it has already exhausted its potential? <\/p>\n

A: The experience of coalitions will be yet in need in Moldova. In the future, this republic may come to have coalitional Governments formed of several parties’ representatives. That was the case in countries with the proportional electoral system. At the present time, governmental coalitions are ruling in Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Germany. <\/p>\n
