During a meeting with members of the Latvian Foreign Affairs Parliamentary Commission in the Seym on Wednesday, the US Congressman John Shimkus announced that “the sooner Russia admits the fact of the ‘Soviet occupation’ of the Baltic nations, the better it would be for Russia itself,” Member of the Commission and Latvia’s former foreign minister Janis Jurkans told a REGNUM correspondent. <\/p>\n

“At the meeting I posed a question how dramatically the US policy towards the Baltic nations has changed,” explained Jurkans. “Was it a policy by the Republicans and President George W. Bush or the common policy by the whole Congress? As the Congressman told us, it was the policy by the whole Congress by almost 100%. It goes about a public recognition of the occupation of the Baltic countries by the Soviet Union, and the sooner Russia does it, said Shimkus, the better it would be for Russia.” <\/p>\n

As Jurkans said, the Iraq issue was also touched upon. “The Congressman even stated that Latvia joined the American campaign in Iraq, because it had been occupied in its past. I opposed him, because I believe that our support is not connected with the occupation or annexation, but is a result of a strong willingness to become NATO members or to be fancied by America. We were and are least interested in the situation in Iraq. In any case, there has been no analysis of the subject at the parliamentary level even on the eve of the forthcoming voting whether to prolong the presence of the Latvian troops in Iraq. All this dictated by ‘Uncle Sam,’ and all we should do is to stand at attention.” <\/p>\n
