Interim mayor of Chisinau Vasile Ursu made public his decision to run for general mayor of Chisinau as independent candidate. “This was not a hasty decision. I think I am able to do this,” Ursu told REPORTER.MD. <\/p>\n

The interim mayor said he consulted a number of colleagues, but did not specify the political parties they represent. The media spread the information that Ursu would be backed by the Communist Party. These rumors followed Ursu’s meetings with the head of state and telephone conversations with Vasile Tarlev. <\/p>\n

Chisinau inhabitants’ problems have been on the first place during my short tenure as interim mayor, Ursu said. “In November 27 elections I will bank on everybody that knows and supports me. I will continue the programs implemented until now”. <\/p>\n

Ursu did not announce the exact date when he was going to submit the registration documents to the Chisinau District Electoral Council (CDEC), but he specified he would do that as soon as he collected the 10,000 signatures an independent candidate needs. <\/p>\n

Vasile Ursu was appointed as interim mayor of the capital after Serafim Urechean had chosen the mandate of MP instead of that of general mayor. <\/p>\n

CDEC registered 10 electoral candidates for the local elections from July 10, 2005. Yet, only two candidates remained to stand in the rerun July 24 elections: representative of the Communist Party, Zinaida Greceanii, and representative of “Patria-Rodina-Ravnopravie” Bloc, Valeri Klimenco. <\/p>\n
