“The opening of the European Commission’s Delegation to Moldova symbolizes a new stage in the EU – Moldova relations. This is an excellent opportunity and a wonderful beginning for the delegation,” European Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighborhood Policy Benita Ferrero-Waldner told in her inauguration speech. <\/p>\n

The high European official added that the delegation will facilitate the exchange of ideas and information between the EU and Moldova confirming the willingness of Brussels to help Moldova overcome its economic, political and social problems. “The best framework for this is the Plan of Actions Moldova-EU,” Ferrero-Waldner said. <\/p>\n

Referring to the EU assistance in the Transdniestrian issue, the European Commissioner pointed out that she will sign today an agreement regarding the Border Assistance Mission at the Moldova-Ukraine state border. “It is a very important step that would lead to more transparent borders, which is a step towards the settlement of the Transdniestrian dispute,” Mrs Ferrero-Waldner told. <\/p>\n

Moldovan Foreign Minister Andrei Stratan stated in turn that the opening of European Commission’s Delegation in Moldova has a special importance. “The EU Delegation is more than an office, it is a sign of long-lasting partnership based on confidence and common values, while the internal changes test the validity of Moldova’s commitments for democratization and the observance of human rights,” Stratan said. <\/p>\n

European Commissioner Benita Fererro-Waldner and Minister Andrei Statan cut the ribbon for the opening of the new headquarters of European Commission’s Delegation. <\/p>\n

First Moldovan President Mircea Snegur, Speaker of the Parliament Marian Lupu, Moldovan MPs and foreign diplomats accredited to Moldova attended the ceremony. <\/p>\n

Cesare De Montis is the first Head of the European Commission’s Delegation to Moldova He has previously held a similar position in Venezuela. <\/p>\n

The ambassadors of the EU member countries, as well as the EU Special Representative for Moldova Adrian Jacobovitz de Szeged, were the ones that acted until now as intermediaries between Moldova and the EU.
