Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin met a delegation of the Russian State Duma’ Group for ties with the Moldovan Parliament who paid a 2-day visit to this republic. <\/p>\n

The head of state qualified that visit as "timely and necessary", and expressed hope it will facilitate a better awareness of Russian state structures on the political, social and economic situation in Moldova, on the Moldovan society’s real moods, and the Moldovan state’s strategic objectives. <\/p>\n

The Moldovan President considers it is inadmissible "to sacrifice the centuries-old friendship between Moldova and Russia to the criminal ambitions of small groups of people both in Russia and Moldova who are interested in supporting the Transnistrian separatism". <\/p>\n

Vladimir Voronin emphasized the Transnistria problem is the only but the most serious obstacle to a better using of the Moldova-Russia cooperation potential. He highlighted the Moldovan leadership’ and Moldovan people’s viewpoint on the nature and prerequisites of the Transnistrian separatism, saying its roots are in the corruption and criminal interests of those who have been exploiting for years the absence of any legal or international control in that region. <\/p>\n

The Moldovan President believes there exist neither ethnic nor language grounds for Tiraspol leadership’s claims concerning human right protection. In his words, the ethnic composition of populations on both Dniester banks is the same, therefore Tiraspol’s reference to a need for protecting the interests of Russian-speaking citizens from the ‘nationalist’ threats allegedly coming from Chisinau are easily dispelled even with a superficial analysis of the real state of thins in that delicate sphere. <\/p>\n

Voronin voiced hope the visit of the Russian State Duma delegation will help to debunk the myths created by the Tiraspol regime to enlist support by Russian state structures, including the State Duma. <\/p>\n

The President said Moldova’s striving for preserving its state sovereignty and territorial integrity is natural and fair, and the country leadership shall be working to achieve a political, lasting settlement of the Transnistria problem. <\/p>\n
