At the end of the meeting, the Moldovan Minister for Reintegration Vasili Sova stated for the radio station Free Europe that the main issue on the agenda was the invitation of the US and the EU as observers to the next round of negotiations. The meeting addressed the matter in detail, yet, a decision has not been reached. Sova voiced hope that today the sides will coordinate their positions and will finally come to a decision. “I think mediators’ proposal makes it possible to organize a new round of negotiations with the participation of the US and the EU as observers in late October already”, Sova said. <\/p>\n

The other participants in the meeting did not make declarations for the press at the end of Monday’s debates. Still, Russian Ambassador with Special Missions Valeri Nesteruskin said yesterday there are chances of making steps towards the resumption of negotiations on the settlement of the Transdniestrian conflict. <\/p>\n

Vladimir Tusko, the governor of Odessa region, was quoted by Free Europe as confirming that there are cases of smuggling at the Moldova-Ukraine border, on the Transdniestrian segment, as well as cases of corruption among customs officers and frontier guards. <\/p>\n

On the other hand, the Russian agency REGNUM quoted Dmitri Tkaci, special representative of the Ukrainian President to negotiations, who said that the public opinion should not expect too much from this kind of meetings that do not have even the status of negotiations. <\/p>\n

The consultations in Odessa are being held in five-sided format, with the participation of representatives of Moldova and Transdniestria, as well as of Russia, Ukraine, and OSCE as mediators. The agenda of the meeting also includes discussions on the general process of Transdniestria’s democratization, the organization of control at the military-industrial enterprises of the region, and a report on the actions taken to create a monitoring mission at the Moldova-Ukraine state border. Other issues on the agenda are the Russian ammunitions in Transdniestria, as well as the modification of the peacekeeping operation on the Dniester in line with Yushchenko’s plan. The discussions are being held behind closed doors. The meeting will end today. <\/p>\n
