On his behalf, the leader from Tiraspol, Igor Smirnov, has approved the acceptance of the US and EU in the negotiation process, but only as observers. <\/p>\n<p>Vladimir Voronin met the Romanian President Traian Basescu on Sunday, in Iasi. During the meeting, the two officials discussed ways of cooperation on the settlement of the Transdniestrian dispute. <\/p>\n<p>Basescu voiced regret that Romania left the negotiation process in 1992. The official said that Romania does not see Transdniestria apart from Moldova&rsquo;s authority and sovereignty and that Bucharest will back Moldova&rsquo;s interests in this process. &ldquo;Romania has offered and will continue to offer support to Moldova in all international institutions. Romania will constantly back Moldova so that the Transdniestrian conflict is settled in line with the European standards,&rdquo; Traian Basescu concluded at the end of his meeting with Vladimir Voronin. <\/p>\n<p>The two officials agreed that elections in Transdniestria are premature. &ldquo;We have signed with Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko a document that stipulates the creation of an international commission to monitor the democratization of Transdniestria. Elections will take place only when this process is over,&rdquo; Voronin said. &ldquo;You can not speak of free elections in Transdniestria. There are no political parties, no free media, and no right to opinion. The attempt of the Transdniestrian authorities to organize elections in such conditions can end in a failure only, as these elections will not be recognized at international level,&rdquo; Basescu said in turn. <\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the leader of the breakaway region of Transdniestria, Igor Smirnov, has agreed to accept the US and EU in the negotiation process, but only as observers. <\/p>\n<p>According to Smirnov, neither the EU nor the US have a real plan for the settlement of the Transdniestrian conflict and cannot assume bigger responsibilities than those of observer.
