\"\"Serafim Urechean, leader of the parliamentary faction of “Our Moldova” Alliance (AMN), announced Friday he renounces the parliamentary immunity. He pointed out that the decision was taken at a decisive moment, he thwarting thus authorities’ plans for political revenge. <\/p>\n

According to the declaration, the legal cases filed against a number of AMN MPs prove that the current government is on a natural decline caused by its authoritative actions that undermines the evolution of the state. <\/p>\n

“I am grateful and I appreciate AMN parliamentarians’ intention to renounce the parliamentary immunity in a move of solidarity, but I find it inadequate for the faction and dangerous for the capacity of holding the position of opposition parliamentarian in a Communist regime. Thus, as leader of the faction, I have ordered to stop such actions and we agreed to use the method of legislative amendments that would make more precise the limits of the immunity so that the elected officials bear direct responsibility for their illegal actions,” Mr. Urechean said. <\/p>\n

He told REPORTER.MD that the decision to renounce his parliamentary immunity is a right guaranteed by the Constitution of Moldova. He said he waits for the decision to be approved by the Parliament. “I want to prove to those who asserted I was hiding that I am not afraid because the truth is on my side”, Mr. Urechean stated. <\/p>\n

Iurie Cojocaru, head of the Constitutional Law Division of the Parliament, specified for REPORTER.MD that, according to the legislation, an MP can renounce his parliamentary immunity only after the approval of the Parliament. <\/p>\n

Dumitru Diacov, leader of the parliamentary faction of the Democratic Party, told REPORTER.MD that it is within the competence of the Parliament to decide on such issue as renunciation of the parliamentary immunity. He qualified Mr. Urecheanu’s actions as naïve. “He took such a decision as a result of the present situation in the Parliament,” Mr. Diacov said. <\/p>\n

Iurie Rosca, vice chairman of parliament, has made similar statements, asserting that the AMN leader cannot renounce the immunity because it is established by the Constitution and can be lifted only by vote. <\/p>\n

Vladimir Eremciuc, deputy chairman of the parliamentary faction of the Communist Party, described the decision of renouncing the parliamentary immunity as absurd, saying that the AMN leader will have the possibility to prove his innocence in court. <\/p>\n

Serafim Urechean, ex-mayor of the Chisinau municipality, is accused in a dubious deal that defrauded the municipal budget of about 240,000 dollars.
