Because of the tremendous mistake made by the author who wrote the President’s speech, Romanians are thought to be a minority in Transdniestria <\/strong><\/p>\n

Romanian President Traian Basescu talked to the UN General Assembly about the crisis in Transdniestria, where "people are not protected by laws or principles". The Romanian President warned: "at 60 years since the UNO was established, basic human rights and liberties are still being broken". (…) Traian Basescu pleaded: "UNO should not hesitate in activating mechanisms at hand to confront such threats and take appropriate measures. We hope the new Human Rights Council will have a more efficient and credible approach to such injustice." <\/p>\n

Smirnov militia’s assault <\/strong><\/p>\n

President Basescu also referred to the Transdniester militia assault on Romanian schools last year. But the author of the President’s speech proved poor knowledge of Transdniestria, which made Romanian presidency staff look amateurish. The author of the speech mentioned the Romanians in Transdnietria had been placed on the persecuted minority category, whereas things are actually the other way around. (…) <\/p>\n

Traian Basescu claimed that Romania’s experience in south-eastern Europe and the Black Sea region showed that measures to handle conflicts could decide on regional action and promote solutions to transnational threats. President Basescu emphasized Romania was for regional dialogue and cooperation and wanted to promote its experience at international level. <\/p>\n

Terrorism, "the new enemy of mankind" <\/strong><\/p>\n

The fight of terrorism should focus more on causes and less on consequences, outlined President Basescu in his speech. The Romanian President opined: "The whole world must face a new ideology that shows no respect for state, societies, cultures or human rights: the ideology of terror. I believe this new ideology is the new enemy of mankind." (…) <\/p>\n

The Romanian President reminded that Romania was to become president of the UN Security Council in October 1st. He said Romania took responsibility to contribute to global efforts meant to eliminate the most worrying form of terrorism (…) <\/p>\n

Kosovo as Romania’s priority <\/strong><\/p>\n

President Traian Basescu took this opportunity to express Romania’s objectives in relation to the country’s future position as president of the UNO Security Council. The Romanian official listed the search for solution to the Kosovo conflict. He also talked about it during his bilateral meeting with Albanian President Sali Berisha. Romania’s second priority was the more efficient collaboration and involvement of regional organizations in the search for solutions to local conflicts. Basescu pleaded for better collaboration with regional structures.
