\"\"Gheorghe Amihalachioae, lawyer of Moldova’s former defence minister Valeriu Pasat, has said the defence will not need the testimonies of U.S. officials acting as witnesses for his client. He said waiting for their statements would delay the legal proceedings.<\/p>\n

Under Moldovan Penal Code, the lawyer said, all the sides have the right to question the witnesses. Therefore, the court will need between six and twelve months to study the evidence against his client, who faces now grave health problems, Mr. Amihalachioae noted.<\/p>\n

The lawyer had earlier said the U.S. witnesses asked by the defence to testify in the Pasat case would not be able to show up in Chisinau in connection with Moldova’s financial constrains related to travel and accomodation. Amihalachioaie said the decision to renounce the U.S. depositions – which he thinks are "crucial" – rests with the central district court of Chisinau.<\/p>\n

The next sitting is scheduled for September 9, when the last witness of the defence will testify.<\/p>\n

The trial of General Pasat are closed for the general public, because the controversial sale of 21 MiG-29 fighter jets is considered a "sensitive information," and the government classified the case.<\/p>\n

According to Amihalachioaie, none of the persons summoned to testify has made depositions against the former minister.<\/p>\n
