Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin and Romanian President Traian Basescu discussed the developments around the Transnistria issue by telephone on Thursday, officials in the Moldovan presidency told BASA. <\/p>\n

Voronin thanked his Romanian counterpart for Bucharest’s efforts in European and international institutions to help Chisinau settle the long time conflict with a separatist regime in eastern Moldova. <\/p>\n

The two leaders agreed to update each other in the matter and to exchange information regarding the events in the breakaway enclave. They also agreed to have a meeting in Romania on return from the United Nations session in September, in New York, to discuss the future of Moldovan-Romanian relations. <\/p>\n

Voronin passed his condolences to Basescu over the deaths that resulted from floods in Romania. <\/p>\n

The western neighbour, which in 2007 is expected to join the European Union, has been strongly supporting Moldova’s bid to become part of the bloc and to settle its problem in the east. <\/p>\n

During a visit to Moscow last April, President Basescu told his Russian counterpart that the new government in Bucharest wanted to participate in the Transnistria settlement process. He asked Putin to support this initiative. <\/p>\n

The Romanian authorities also promised to help Ukraine seal off the border with Moldova, especially in the Transnistrian zone, in a move to end the contraband with arms, drugs, and human beings. <\/p>\n
