The EU pledged its assistance to both sides involved in conflict to build the peace and coexistence of the two states &#8211; Israel and the Palestinian State.<\/p>\n<p>Both Moldova and Ukraine set their foreign policy major priority to move towards joining the EU. <\/p>\n<p>Moldova is interested in the EU engagement in settling its own conflict with&nbsp;breakaway Eastern region Transnistria. This week, a European Union mission for monitoring the Moldovan-Ukrainian border is assessing the situation on the border. The mission is led by Ambassador Adriaan Jacobovits de Szeged, the European Union&#8217;s Special Representative for Moldova, and includes officials from the European Commission and the EU Council&#8217;s General Secretariat. The EU delegation will be visiting border-crossing stations in Ukraine and Moldova. It is hoped that the monitoring will put to an end the contraband of goods and potentially arms trafficking that makes Transnistria a tax free haven and a source for illegal revenues and a potential weapons supplier for terrorist groups.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>This visit has been organized in response to the joint request made by Ukraine&#8217;s President Victor Yushchenko and Moldova&#8217;s President Vladimir Voronin in early July this year.<\/p>\n\n<p>* * *<\/p>\n<p><strong>Statement by the Presidency on behalf of the European Union on disengagement<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Council of the European Union<\/p>\n<p>Brussels, 25 August 2005<\/p>\n\n<p>The European Union welcomes the historic progress made on Israel&#8217;s withdrawal from Gaza and parts of the northern West Bank. It commends the Israeli Government and Palestinian Authority for their commitment to overcome the difficult challenges they face.<\/p>\n<p>The European Union pays tribute to the courage of Prime Minister Sharon, and the Israeli Government, for implementing the disengagement plan, and to the Israeli security forces for their conduct. It also recognises the commitment of the Palestinian Authority in assisting a peaceful withdrawal. It applauds the close coordination between both sides and encourages them to continue on this path. It welcomes, and urges the continuation of, the restraint shown by the majority of Israelis and Palestinians.<\/p>\n<p>The European Union believes that disengagement should be a significant step towards implementing the Quartet Roadmap.
