Four of the 10 candidates running for Chisinau Mayor regard as very important the working out and realization of a new General Plan of capital city development. They stated this during the last night’s live debate on the Moldova-1 channel of the National Television. <\/p>\n

Communist Party candidate Zinaida Grechanaya highlighted that in the absence of such General Plan, it is impossible to convert Chisinau into a really European city. <\/p>\n

Independent candidate Juliana Gorea-Costin stated that the Plan which has been de jure in force here was approved yet in the Soviet era – in 1989, when the vision of the city development was totally different than now. She advised that a draft of such General Plan has already been prepared with UNDP’s assistance, and that “the United Nations Development Program stands ready to help realize the Plan, including by providing funding”. <\/p>\n

Independent candidate Mihai Severovan pointed out that the absence of an up-to-date General Plan is a serious impediment to investment. The former Moldovan Minister of Construction and Utility Services is convinced the solution of many acute technical and social problems in Chisinau is only possible through realization of the said General Plan prepared with UNDP’s help. <\/p>\n

Christian Democratic Popular Party candidate MP George Susarenco stated that if the city fails to implement a new General Plan in the nearest time, then “cafes, bars, entertainment centers and even dwelling houses will be emerging right on sidewalks, in parks and public gardens”. <\/p>\n

Candidate Valery Klimenko of the Ravnopraviye [Equal Rights] Socio-Political Movement\/Patria-Rodina voting bloc presumes candidates for mayor should not concentrate only on General Plan: “Its realization will require hundreds of thousand dollars, which we have none. Therefore, instead of talking in general terms, I suggest that we proceed to concrete deeds – repair roads in the city and solve the utility tariffs problem. Our citizens do not need grandioso ideas or projects. They need solution of everyday problems”.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
