The Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) is ready to organise elections in the supreme soviet of Transnistria at the end of this year, in compliance with the international standards, Kimmo Kiljunen, chairman of the delegation of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly (PA) for Moldova, told journalists at the end of a three-day visit to Moldova on Friday. <\/p>\n

The European official hinted that this scrutiny could be held in line with the electoral legislation of the region, and would legalise any ruling regime. <\/p>\n

"The organisation of elections in the supreme soviet on basis or legislation of Tiraspol or Chisinau will be established within negotiations on preparations for the scrutiny. These issues must be tackled very seriously within negotiations and could give an impulse to the negotiation process, and would contribute to finalisation of the statute of the Transnistrian region by respecting Moldova’s integrity," Kiljunen said. He noted that Transnistria’s status on the international arena will not change regardless of the results of these elections, and it will be treated as part of Moldova. <\/p>\n

Kiljunen expressed optimism that the OSCE parliamentarians would accept the organisation of elections in Transnistria by an international election commission, with the mandate of this organisation, at the next session of the OSCE\/PA in Washington in early July. <\/p>\n

He underlined that thus the entire electoral process would be monitored, not only the election day and counting of votes. "Tiraspol will have to guarantee the freedom of mass media, free access of the electorate to information about all electoral candidates, guarantees for a free activity of political parties, election security," Kiljunen stressed. <\/p>\n

Also, he underlined that the OSCE will not monitor the elections and recognise their results, if Tiraspol organises the scrutiny alone. <\/p>\n

According to an appeal on democratisation of the Transnistrian region, which the Moldovan parliament adopted on June 10, "the organisation of free and democratic elections in the Transnistrian region is impossible in case of negligence of Moldova’s Constitution and international democratic standards, absence of political pluralism and freedom of expression, repression of any manifestation of attitude different of the one imposed by force."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
