Latvian authorities are optimistic about the chances of our country’s integration into the EU, but they draw attention to the seriousness of commitments made by the countries outside the Union to Brussels. <\/p>\n

Under-Secretary of State for European Affairs of the Latvian Foreign Ministry, Astra Kurme, stated at a meeting with a group of Moldovan journalists that Latvia wants to share with our country its experience of European integration. “Now, after we have integrated into EU, we consider that is our obligation to help other states to reach the same level of development. Moldova and Latvia have many common characteristics – they are similar in dimensions and in number of citizens and at the beginning of 90’s we have started from the same point,” said Astra Kurme. Latvian diplomat mentioned that Riga Government will finance for starters six projects of cooperation with the authorities of our country inclusively cooperation with a view to administration of frontiers, penitentiary system and others. <\/p>\n

Under-Secretary of State has mentioned that the chances of our country’s integration into EU depends on neighbor states, like Ukraine. But she warned that “EU is an organization without feelings, if you comply with the European standards and prove that you managed to apply them, it receives and recognizes your as member of the European family. If you state that you want to integrate but you do not undertake necessary actions – it answers you ruthlessly that you do not withstand the rigors,” also added the quoted source. <\/p>\n
