\nMoldova and Ukraine have agreed on the demarcation of the Moldovan-Ukrainian border, and five Moldovan-Ukrainian joint customs and border guard points will be set up outside the Transnistrian segment starting 1 July. The heads of states reached an agreement to this effect during a today’s meeting. <\/p>\n

Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin, during the meeting, has highly appreciated the Ukrainian plan to settle the Transnistrian conflict. He said that chances to solve the issue are bigger now given the willingness of Kiev and international organisations to participate in the settlement process. <\/p>\n

Voronin hailed the setting up of the five joint points. He highly appreciated the joint letter the two presidents have sent to the European Commission and European Union, calling for an international monitoring on the Transnistrian segment of the Moldovan-Ukrainian border. <\/p>\n

The president announced that a complex report on the Transnistrian conflict will be unveiled during a next-week parliamentary meeting, which will be attended by the cabinet of ministers too. At the same time, the Moldovan and Ukrainian competent ministries will adopt a mechanism to carry out the agreement on free circulation on the transborder segment. "During ten days, the governments of the two states will re-assess the existing bilateral problems, and will search a solution to the export of Ukrainian electric energy to the Balkan states through Moldova," Voronin said. <\/p>\n

Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko told a visit-closing news conference that the today’s meeting proves the political will of the two states to settle the Transnistrian conflict, as well as other existing problems. Yushchenko expressed satisfaction with the good appreciation by Moldova and international organisations of the Ukrainian plan to settle the Transnistrian conflict. "The Transnistrian conflict is a political conflict and has to be solved by political measures. It seems to me that the Tiraspol authorities positively appreciate Ukraine’s initiative too," Yushchenko said. <\/p>\n
