\nPrior to admission to the European Union, Moldova first has to receive an associated member status. For this, the republic is supposed to fulfill a whole number of conditions, believe Josette Durrieu and AndrĂŠ Kvakkestad, the PACE Rapporteurs on Moldova. <\/p>\n

They told a news conference here Wednesday night that one of such indispensable conditions is society democratization and a reform of the State in compliance with European standards. They expressed hope that this latter reform will be accomplished here by the end of this year. All actions by Moldova have been and will be under the Council of Europe’s close control. Josette Durrieu offered an opinion, in particular, that after a decade of CE monitoring, there is no more room for indulgence. <\/p>\n

In her words, after the March 6 parliamentary elections, Moldova has managed to achieve a political stability. The Council of Europe now sees political parties’ firm resolution to implement all necessary reforms and integrate the country into the European Union. "We have trust in the political will of the ruling team, and in its desire to change the situation for the better", said Josette Durrieu. Answering journalists’ questions about Transnistrian settlement, the PACE Rapporteurs pointed out, in particular, that the CE’s monitoring of Moldova lasted as long as about 10 years due to the Transnistria conflict, too. Andre Kvakkestad said Moldova is supposed to achieve solution to the conflict as soon as only possible, and the Council of Europe stands ready to provide all necessary assistance to find a lasting solution to the problem. <\/p>\n

The PACE Rapporteurs voiced satisfaction that Ukraine is putting forward its proposals on the issue. <\/p>\n

Andre Kvakkestad presumes the problem could be resolved through granting a special legal status to the Transnistrian region of Moldova. For this, however, the conflicting sides should sit at negotiation table – together with European Union experts – to discuss such status, he said. <\/p>\n
