The ruling Communist Party is preparing to officially nominate incumbent Minister of Finance Zinaida Grechanaya as a candidate for Chisinau Mayor, a source in the MCP Political Executive Council told Infotag. The Council sat on Tuesday to discuss the candidature question.<\/p>\n

According to the source, in the nearest time Zinaida Grechanaya will submit to the Central Electoral Commission her application and all the rest necessary documents for registration as candidate for the July 10 early mayoral elections in the capital city. Our sources in the Ministry of Finance are saying their boss was urgently recalled from a foreign voyage, and immediately rushed home, changing 3 planes. In Chisinau, her surrounding noticed anxiety on her face, but nobody had a faintest idea about the reason.<\/p>\n

Local observers believe the offer to run for Chisinau Mayor must have been a complete surprise to Mrs. Grechanaya. By now, she has organized a nicely tuned work in her ministry, so the Communist Party’s proposal to drop all that and go to another job would hardly be pleasant to her. She is really a good minister of finance, and it would be painful to part with her team after several years of efficient work.<\/p>\n

An expert told Infotag that this nomination by the Communist Party will certainly be a shock for the Moldovan political and business elite. At the same time, the decision to nominate for city mayor candidacy nobody but Zinaida Grechanaya, one of the most efficient ministers in the entire history of the independent Republic of Moldova, confirms once again the unpredictable nature of the Moldovan Communist Party leader – President of Moldova Vladimir Voronin.<\/p>\n

Till the last moment, the Communist Party leadership was discussing several other possible candidacies. Among them were former Moldovan Ambassador to Russia, currently parliament member Vladimir Turcan; former Prime Minister, currently Vice-President of Rompetrol Holding Ion Sturza; Chairman of the Moldovan Chamber for Commerce and Industry George Cucu; Deputy Premier, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Andrei Stratan; former presidential Foreign Policy Adviser, currently a Presidential Office CEO Alexander Petkov; former Minister of Energy Iacob Timciuc; former Minister of Transport and Telecommunications Vasile Zgardan [who lost the 2003 mayoral elections to Serafim Urechean].<\/p>\n

Of all the above-mentioned personalities, the candidature of Ion Sturza was believed by many as the strongest one, but Sturza refused point blank to come back to state power structures.<\/p>\n

There are strong reasons to believe that the ruling Communist Party regards the new Mayor to be elected in July as only ‘a transitional figure’, because the next, ordinary election will be held within less than 2 years. Politicians are saying that in 2007, the capital city will be entrusted to a really sound candidate of the ruling party – current Prime Minister Vasily Tarlev.
