INFOTAG. April 29 2005. The Republic of Moldova has demanded from the Russian Federation to operatively investigate into the facts of disappearance of equipment, related to nuclear arms, from the military depots of the Russian 14th Army in Transnistria. <\/p>\n

Today, the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration sent a Note to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, saying that on April 25, the "Political Journal" periodical published an article about the disappearance of two nuclear explosion imitators and of the so-called "nuclear briefcases" from Russian military depots in Transnistria. <\/p>\n

"The Moldovan authorities have many a time expressed concern over the threat the Russian weapons in Transnistria present to security of the country and this region of Europe as a whole. The latest revelations in the Russian mass media are confirming our apprehensions and indicating the need for the immediate organization of an international inspection of the military depots in the Kobasna village, and for resumption and prompt completion of the arms withdrawal", the ministerial Note said. <\/p>\n

The author of the article in question, Alexei Nesterenko, wrote it on the basis of an interview with Col. Mihail Bergman, who served in the Russian 14th Army together its former commander Lt. Gen. Alexander Lebed. Later, Bergman was Tiraspol town major. He maintains that after the demise of the USSR, much weaponry disappeared from the said military depots, including the sensitive items mentioned in the publication. <\/p>\n

Presently, approximately 20 thousand tons of Russian ammunition, arms and other military equipment are still available at the depots. <\/p>\n
