\"\"President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov has sent to Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin, chairing in the GUUAM, a letter containing an official notification on Uzbekistan’s secession from this regional organization uniting Georgia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, and Moldova. <\/p>\n

Mr. Karimov wrote that due to a substantial revision and change of the initial objectives set by GUUAM founders at the very beginning, the official Tashkent has decided to state it is quitting the Organization. <\/p>\n

"Lately, emphasis is being placed on the ideological and military-political components of cooperation within GUUAM, on resolving frozen conflicts, on the formation of joint military units and revision of the existing system of security. Due to its geographic location, Uzbekistan cannot participate in these processes, but stands ready to develop bilateral cooperation with GUUAM member states", wrote the leader of the FSU Central Asiatic republic. <\/p>\n

GUUAM member states’ joint decision on this statement by Uzbekistan will be taken after the Organization’s presidency has informed all the states concerned. <\/p>\n

Last 3 years, Uzbekistan has been in GUUAM purely nominally, taking practically no part in its activities. The final decision to put an end to such a ‘dead membership’ was taken after the recent GUUAM Chisinau Summit, at which Uzbekistan was represented only by its Ambassador to Moldova. The Organization was established on October 10, 1997, during Council of Europe Summit in Strasbourg.
