The Embassies of the United States of America, of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania, the Special Representative of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, and the OSCE Mission at Moldova issued a Joint Statement on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day. <\/p>\n

They wrote that a free and independent press is an important measure of a State’s commitment to democratic values and good governance. The Moldovan authorities have stated on a number of occasions their intention to adhere to democratic standards, including those related to freedom of the press. Moldova’s leaders have declared themselves in favour of a modern and professional press, as part of the consolidation of democracy in Moldova. The importance of press freedom is also reflected in the EU-Moldova Action Plan. <\/p>\n

The Signatories of this declaration welcomed the intentions of the Moldovan authorities. On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, declared by UNESCO, we express our hope that these aspirations will be fulfilled, and that the joint recommendations of the OSCE and Council of Europe for the development of public mass media and those of international organizations that monitored the 2005 parliamentary elections will be implemented, in the near future. \/\/ INFOTAG<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
