MP Ion Varta of the parliamentary Christian Democratic Popular Party faction has demanded from the Government to suspend the activities of CMC-Knauf company (Germany) that quarries gypsum near the Criva village (Briceni raion). <\/p>\n

"The situation is becoming explosive there. The distance between the quarry and the village’s edge houses has by now shrunk to 1 kilometer. Two months ago, the company decided to buy the last farmlands separating the quarry and the village. This step may have extremely grave consequences for the Criva villagers", Ion Varta said. <\/p>\n

The thing is, about 50 houses already have various-size fractures in walls and floors caused by explosions made in the quarry. The ammonium nitrate used at the explosions influences negatively the quality of fruit and vegetables grown in that zone. And perhaps the most scandalous aftermath of the gypsum neighborhood is that potable water escaped from village wells: water accumulates in pools at the bottom of the deep quarry, so the German company simply pumps it out into the Dniester River, said the deputy.<\/p>\n

He also remarked that the Criva quarry is situated in the immediate proximity to a unique monument of nature – the Emil Racovita cave, the 3rd longest one in Europe.
