The Moldovan delegation to the Joint Control Commission (JCC) for the Transnistrian Conflict Settlement has suspended its participation in the body’s work in protest against the Transnistrian side’s ignoring its own commitments to ensure free movement of people, farm machines and cargoes intended for field works.<\/p>\n

At the yesterday’s Commission working session, Moldovan JCC Co-Chairman Brig. Gen. Ion Solonenko read out a corresponding statement of protest against a new incident in the Dorotcaia village, after which the delegation quitted the room. There was a sound reason for that.<\/p>\n

Situated on the left Dniester River bank, the village itself is under Moldova’s jurisdiction. However, a part of its land wealth (about a thousand hectares behind the Tiraspol-Rybnitsa strategic highway) is claimed by Tiraspol as "an indisputably Transnistrian territory". Accordingly, the separatist republic has installed its border-guard and customs posts along the ‘border’, treating local peasants as foreigners and demanding taxes on their trucks carrying agricultural produce<\/p>\n

Last Saturday, Transnistrian customs and border officers did not let Dorotcaia peasants to their fields – in such a critical spring season time. That caused villagers’ indignation.<\/p>\n

"In fact, the Transnistrian JCC delegation challenged the decisions taken by the Commission, and its Co-Chairmen’s conferences, and Ambassadors of guarantor countries and the OSCE, and by the sides’ plenipotentiary representatives on ensuring peace and order in the central Security Zone", said the Statement.<\/p>\n

Its authors reserved the right to suspend their participation in the JCC work and to request the OSCE Chairman-in-Office to delegate a group of international experts to examine the situation developing in the Security Zone.<\/p>\n

Transnistrian JCC Co-Chairman Alexander Porojan qualified the Moldovan delegation’s decision as non-constructive and dangerous for the situation on the whole, "as this may lead to a new conflict".<\/p>\n

Tiraspol believes that Moldova deliberately provoked the action of protest at the Transnistrian customs\/border station in Dorotcaia to preserve strain there.
