\"\"Chisinau Mayor Serafim Urechean, who heads also the opposition parliamentary Moldova Noastra Alliance faction of 23, stated today he is resigning as the city father. <\/p>\n

Urechean stated at a Chisinau Municipality weekly working meeting this morning that in the present-day situation, he preferred to be a member of parliament. However, Serafim Urechean is not ruling out the possibility of his participation in an early election of Chisinau Mayor that may be held in the capital city after his departure from the City Hall. <\/p>\n

"In parliament, I will be defending the interests of Chisinau citizens and entire populace of Moldova thus fulfilling my electoral pledges", Serafim Urechean said. <\/p>\n

"During the past election campaign, I saw once again that Moldova has been in an economic devastation, and that the authorities have chosen an erroneous development direction that only aggravates the situation. During more than 11 years of my tenure as a Mayor, we have managed to do quite much here. Lately, however, a changed political situation did not permit to keep everything under control. In recent years, political persecutions and arrests came to be used in this republic", said Serafim Urechean. <\/p>\n

He said is was hard to him to resign as Chisinau Mayor, "but I made that step in order to defend the interests of the 450 thousand Moldovans who had voted for the Democratic Moldova voting bloc. I realize there are people both in the Chisinau Municipality and in the Parliament who rejoice over my departure as the Mayor, but I hope other times will come one day, when everything will change". <\/p>\n

Serafim Urechean has passed Mayor’s plenary powers over to his Deputy, Mihai Furtuna. April 18 was the deadline for Urechean to decide about remaining the Mayor or working as a lawmaker. He could be governing the capital city for 2 more years from now. <\/p>\n

Chisinau ex-Mayor Serafim Urechean is not ruling out that there may be no early election of a new Mayor. <\/p>\n

Today, Serafim Urechean convened a news conference and reminded that, by law, the question of holding an early election has to be solved within 2 months from mayor’s resignation. But he believes there are legal grounds to hold no early election now, but to wait till 2007 and hold an ordinary election. <\/p>\n

"It is too early yet to speak about a candidacy I would like to see as the next Chisinau Mayor. Prior to this, I would like to consult citizens and the Moldova Noastra Alliance [which Urechean heads]. To my mind, mayor’s functions can well be performed by Deputy Mayor Mihai Furtuna whom I have appointed as Acting Mayor. May be, he will be heading the capital city until the 2007 ordinary elections", said Serafim Urechean. <\/p>\n

He categorically refuted rumors that he remains in parliament only to get the immunity of a deputy and protect himself from persecution by law-enforcement organs. <\/p>\n

"The parliamentary immunity is a shield that can be removed during 30 seconds, if necessary. I know only one criminal case initialed against me – the one related to the city’s purchasing of ambulance vehicles. That case is nothing but a political provocation, and all accusations against me will collapse. At least, the General Prosecutor’s Office has not summoned me since last December, when I gave evidence last", said Serafim Urechean. <\/p>\n
