Twenty prominent culture figures of Moldova have sent an open letter to the leader of the oppositional parliamentary Moldova Noastra Alliance faction Serafim Urechean, requesting him to renounce his mandate of a parliamentarian and remain Chisinau Mayor.<\/p>\n

They wrote that the national intelligentsia believed in the unity of the Democratic Moldova voting bloc that had been created to consolidate "democratic and national forces".<\/p>\n

"The bloc’s breakup due to the actions by deputy groups headed by Iurie Rosca, Oleg Serebrean, and Dumitru Diakov was an act of political corruption so disgraceful for a state that has declared integration into Europe as its chief objective", said the letter.<\/p>\n

Its authors believe that in such an environment, Urechean’s remaining in parliament would imperil Chisinau city’s destiny, so they begged him to remain Chisinau Mayor, which post he has been holding since 1994.<\/p>\n

The culture celebrities presume that in this quality, Serafim Urechean will be more useful for defending democratic values, national culture, for supporting the European integration process and dialog between cultures in the modern world.<\/p>\n

The open letter was signed by Chairman of the Union of Moldovan Writers academician Mihai Cimpoi, Chairman of the Union of Theater Workers Aurelian Danila, academicians Petru Soltan, Grigore Vieru, Dumitru Matcovschi, Nicolae Dabija, People’s Artist of the Soviet Union Mihai Volontir, journalists Constantin Tanase and Val Butnaru, and other.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
