\"\"Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin has been elected head of the Republic of Moldova for another 4-year term of office. <\/p>\n

Today, he received the support of 75 members of the 101-seat Moldovan Parliament (the minimum necessary number of votes was 61), and the other candidate – president of the Moldovan Academy of Sciences George Duca received only 1 vote. <\/p>\n

A total of 78 MPs of the Communist Party, Christian Democratic Popular Party, Democratic Party, and Social Liberal Party took part in the voting. Deputies representing the Moldova Noastra Alliance in the Democratic Moldova voting bloc faction refused to vote. President Vladimir Voronin expressed gratitude to all those who backed his candidacy. He stated that in the nearest days he would announce a candidature for Prime Minister who will form a new government to be approved by parliament. <\/p>\n

Vladimir Voronin was born on May 25, 1941 in the Corjova village of the Dubossary raion (in Transnistria). In 1961, he graduated from Chisinau Cooperative College, in 1971 – All-USSR Institute of Food Industry (in Moscow), in 1983 – Academy of Political Sciences under the auspices of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, and in 1991 – Academy of the USSR Ministry of the Interior. Voronin is a Police Major General. <\/p>\n

Vladimir Voronin held various positions at state power organs. In 1983-1985, he worked at the apparatus of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of [Soviet] Moldova, in 1985-1989 he was 1st Secretary of the Bendery town committee of the CPM, and in 1989-1990 – Moldovan Minister of the Interior. <\/p>\n

In October 1993, at the Moldovan Communist Party constituent assembly, he was elected a co-chairman of the MCP organizing committee, and at the 1st party congress in December 1994 Voronin was elected MCP First Secretary [since 2001 – MCP Chairman]. In December 1996, he ran for the Moldovan presidency and, having polled 10.23 percent votes, achieved the third best result among 9 candidates. <\/p>\n

He was a member of parliament in 1998 through 2001. After his party had won parliamentary elections in February 2001, he was elected President of the Republic of Moldova by the Communists-dominated forum on April 4, 2001, and took the office 3 days later.
